What "offline" usually means in a store listing

The word gets used for three quite different things, and only one of them survives a long-haul flight.

1. The app launches. It opens, shows a UI, and then every picture in it is a grey rectangle, because the artwork lives on a server.
2. Some content is bundled. A handful of pages ship inside the binary; everything else is streamed. You get four pictures and a store page.
3. Content you downloaded is genuinely yours. You pick things in advance, they land on the device, and they work with the radio off.

Only the third one is worth anything at 38,000 feet. The trouble is that all three are described with the same word.

The four things that break when the signal goes

1. Content delivery

Any app with a large library streams it. That is not a flaw — nobody wants a 2 GB download — but it means the library is a menu, not a pantry. If you did not download something specific in advance, it is not there.

2. Ads

This is the one that catches people out. In an ad-funded app, a rewarded video is often the gate on a feature: a colour palette, a hint, the next page. With no connection the video cannot load, so the gate never opens. The feature is not slow — it is unavailable, and usually with no explanation.

3. Subscription checks

Some apps re-validate entitlements against a server on every launch and lock premium content when the check fails. A paying subscriber can find themselves locked out of what they paid for precisely when they most wanted it. Apps that cache the receipt locally do not have this problem.

4. Autosave that isn't local

If progress is written to a server rather than to the device, an interrupted session offline can be lost rather than resumed. Worth knowing before you spend two hours on something.

A pre-flight checklist

1. Download more than you think you need. Storage is cheaper than boredom, and you cannot add anything later.
2. Check the download actually finished. A queued download and a completed one look similar in most UIs.
3. Force-quit and reopen in Airplane Mode before you leave the house, not at the gate.
4. Open one item all the way — not just the library screen. The library is cached; the content may not be.
5. Check your saved work opens too. Some apps let you make new things offline but not reopen old ones.

Loading up for a week with no signal

1. Pick a spread, not a stack. Grab a few quick models and one or two hard ones. Piece counts run from 20 to 500, and a 500-piece rebuild is a genuinely long evening.
2. Download at maximum detail while you're on Wi-Fi. Detail tier is chosen at download time.
3. Open every puzzle once before you disconnect, per the caveat above.
4. Take the Model of the Day with you. A new one is free for everyone every day — but you have to be connected to draw it, so collect a few in the days before you travel.
5. Test the whole thing in Airplane Mode at home.
